This tab page will incorporate my older tab for the E9th 1st string whole tone raise, 2nd string half tone raise and the newer 7th string whole tone raise. I have also added some new ideas for using this change that will help you break out of the mold of standard sounding E9th riffs. The 7th string whole tone raise has some great new applications but it also covers much of what the older 6th string whole tone lower used to do! Notice that I have all three of these changes on one knee lever and they seem to compliment each other with a minimum of interference. Raising the F#'s to G# allows you to play the G# note against the 3rd/6th strings for unision sounds. More importantly it opens many chromatic possibiities when played against the 3rd/6th strings raised to A and you will find many new and modern sounding chords as well. On those occasions when I need the 1st string to only raise to G, I quickly tune it at the end plate when needed for some retro sounds. On slower tunes I have gotten adept at just hitting the knee lever half way on the fly.

New Example #3 - Here's another cool use as played at 1:45 into Gene Watson and Rhonda Vincent's new album (Your Money and My Good Looks) song also entitled "Your Sweet Love Ain't Around". It doesn't go into the flatted 5th but does use the 1st string F# to G# raise. Note the chord progression is from B to E to D so the last part of this riff is at the 3rd fret! 1st time through is normal speed, 2nd time is slower, 3rd time uses a slide into the 4th fret. You could easily add the flatted 5th move to this!
