12 String Lap Steel Tab

This tab uses the same 12 string C6 tuning popularized by Maurice Anderson. It is tuned D B G E C A G E C A F D high strings to low. It's very similar to the old 10 string "high G" C6 tuning and also very similar to the newer 10 string tuning with a "D" string on top. It's also very different from those tunings because the bottom string is tuned to "D", a high "B" string is added and you will find many new bar slants and string combinations that make this tuning very powerful despite the fact that it is not used on a "pedal steel".

See the tuning chart below for a quick analysis of this tuning. One way to view it is that at the open fret and at frets 3,5,7 and 10 there are pockets of notes in the key of C. There's a C root note at each of these postions and with minor sharps and flats you can easily see all sorts of scales and major, minor, 7th and 9th chords. For example, at the 3rd fret, moving the C note to C# gives you R,3,5, and 7 notes in a row. The same thing can be shown for each of the other positions. Note all the small intervals between strings created by the high D and B strings. Other obvious things like if your playing in the key of C open, you also have the G scale, R,3,5, 4 and 9 available without moving the bar. The first tab below uses this as the ending tag by playing the R,5 steady while playing the 3 then 4 then 9 then 3 notes.
