Playing Night Life On The E9th Tuning

I get a lot of requests about how to play the Ray Price hit "Night Life" on the E9th tuning. The tabs shown below will lead you through a version of this that should work in most applications. I use the standard E9th tuning with the E to Eb knee lever on strings 4 and 8, E to F knee lever on strings 4 and 8 and I lower the 9th string, D to C#. I have a workaround that doesn't require the D to C# change (see the F#m7 chord played on strings 7,5,4,3 in the tab below. A bunch of different possibilties are shown for the chords so pick one that suits you! You can play all the strings shown on the tab or just pick 3 strings out of the 4 string grips. I used to play with one thumb pick and 3 finger picks but now I tend to just strum the extra strings or use my bare ring finger when more than 3 strings are struck at one time. Tabs 1 through 5 show you different ways to play the intro chords. Note that some of them are the same exact notes but just found on different place on the neck. Others will not satisfy the "purists" that insist on certain notes being in each chord, but rest assured that they will sound fine when played in a band setting! Note the unbarred note on string 3 on some of the tabs. This is a great way to pick up more notes from the C6th version. The last row in the table below shows a really easy way to play this from a post I made a few years ago (I dont have an audio file for this tab). Tab 6 puts it all together into a complete solo! I was able to get all the Bo-Wah notes, the hammer-off and the slide into the solo
making it much closer to the feel of the C6th version.
