8 String E13 Lap Steel Tuning
These lap steel tabs and songs were played on an 8 string Excel Jerry Byrd frypan lap steel. All recordings used a silver face Fender Princeton Reverb amp with internal reverb and a Shure
SM-57 mic. Everything was recorded onto a Zoom R24 then ported to a PC for mastering using Reaper. See my separate Excel frypan page for more details on the guitar! The sound files below are
mostly my own creation as I have no previous experience with the E13 tuning although I did mimic a few 60 year old hit sounds! As such you may hear a few different ideas presented for this tuning
than you've heard elsewhere. .
This tuning has a nice high and clear sound
similar to what you'd hear from hard core pickers like Don Helms with Hank Williams and Roy Wiggins with Eddy Arnold. The tabs do include some bar bends and string pulls from
behind the bar which greatly extend the chords and double stops that can be played. Check out the sound files and you will hear some great open strings sounds generating diminished, augmented,
major 7th and 13b9 chords. By retuning the low D to C# and the low B to A you can have an E6th tuning across all 8 strings. You can also detune the strings down and get a C6 tuning with a high G or a C#6 tuning
across all strings.
